David Axelrod’s ‘Believer: My Forty Years in Politics’

”While lamenting that among the Washington press, “success is measured not by what you accomplish, but how voters feel about it at any given moment,” Mr. Axelrod later volunteers that he “devoured” polls every day at the White House. Indeed, when the Treasury secretary at the time, Timothy Geithner, opposed the politically popular tactic of denying Wall Street executives their bonuses — protesting that it “ would be the end of capitalism as we know it!” — Mr. Axelrod fired back, “I hate to break the news, Mr. Secretary, but capitalism isn’t trading very high right now!”
