Indianapolis 500

"If there's any car you have to trust your instincts in, it's an Indy car because there is really no coming back from a snap."

'The 98th running of the Indy 500 is Sunday, May 25. TV coverage begins on ABC at 11 am ET and the green flag is scheduled for 12:12 pm ET.'

DanicVz ON! Win the whole damn thing Girl, win the whole damn thing :-D Top 4 and qualified with 193.334..."She had the fastest lap in the second session of knockout qualifying with a lap of 194.595 mph, not far off of Johnson's pole-winning 194.911 mph."

Jimmie Johnson takes pole with 194.911

"Johnson is the last driver to win NASCAR's longest race from the pole, a feat he accomplished in 2004. In fact, Johnson is the only driver to win from the pole at Charlotte in this century"

'Scott Dixon is the 2008 Indianapolis 500 winner and starts in the middle of Row 4. The three-time Verizon IndyCar Series champion is flanked by two drivers from NASCAR – Juan Pablo Montoya, the 2000 Indy 500 winner and former Formula 1 driver that raced in NASCAR from 2007-2013 in on the inside.'

“I want to win the 500, again,” Montoya said. “That is my plan this year – to get my face back on the BorgWarner Trophy.”

'On the outside is 2004 NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Kurt Busch, who has been impressive in practice and is attempting to be the first driver in 10 years to compete in both the Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day.'

WHERE ARE THE WOMEN OF INDY? One says...
22. (63) Pippa Mann, Ipswich, England, Dale Coyne Racing. Pippa Mann the Woman with a Manns last name will take the command to "start your engines" alone, when the green flag drops at the Brickyard on Sunday.

For the confused, the Daytona 500 is the sprint car races and the Indy 500 is the Formula race cars. The Daytona 500 is in February. This years winner was Dale Earnhardt Jr.

The big thing about Sundays race, other than it being the Indianapolis 500, is that drivers from NASCAR sprint car will also be racing in the Formulas making them drive 1100 miles in one day or 600 laps total and 8 hours in the car...2 cars :-P + the flight!

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Coca-Cola 600 begins at 6 p.m. ET.

Average Speeds for NASCAR will be in the 180 mph arena for the sprint cars, whereas the Formulas are in the 130 mph arena.

'Ed Carpenter will start from the front at this year's Indianapolis 500; 11th driver in history to win the Indy 500 pole in...ROW 4'

The Infamous Indy 4th Row explained, by Asus Al:

"The Indy 4th row always contains 3 highly regarded drivers that are just a millisecond from being on the pole. This year I thought all three drivers looked and proved to be exceptional. It's good to place bets on those drivers for win, place, or show as most gamblers rely on the 9 in the first 3 rows."

Just a long-shot tip, Asus Al   :-)

further explanation was needed ;-)
1+2+3 = 9. Each row at Indy has 3 drivers. The first 3 rows of drivers are in the 9 "fastest qualified" cars. Note the parenthesis. The front 9 are not always the fastest cars, the best drivers, or the quickest crews on race day. When in doubt, take a look at row 4 because everyone else is looking at the front 9. Odds are odds!

Thanks Asus Al! :-)

3:07 p.m. ET: Keep in mind that Kurt Busch (currently 6th), still plans to take a private jet to Charlotte after the Indianapolis 500 to take part in the Coca-Cola 600 later this evening. He's probably not a fan of all these delays. The race should re-start in a few minutes...

3:17 p.m. ET: Ryan Hunter-Reay held off a hard-charging Helio Castroneves to take Sunday's 98th running of the Indianapolis 500. Hunter-Reay and Castroneves traded the lead three separate times over the final two laps, but Hunter-Reay maintained the lead by a car-length.

Marco Andretti, Hunter-Reay's teammate, finished third.

Congratulations and what a race!

CBS Final Post:

'The final seven laps were marred by a Townsend Bell crash that brought a red flag and yet another delay. Crews worked to clean up heavy debris as the cars waited in pit lane until the restart. From there, it was Hunter-Reay and Castroneves, each car attempting a more daring pass than the last. At one point, Hunter-Reay nearly clipped the grass on the inside turn in an effort to overtake Castroneves, who was seeking his fourth Indy 500 title. The maneuver worked, propelling him to the lead.'
